This week I’ll be tasting four wines that will bring a smile to your face. Is it the greatest wine tasting ever in the history of wine tasting? In the history of the world? Ahhhh, nope, I’m not that big of a blowhard to think that. But these wines are damn good and I am pretty confident you will like all of them. We even have a wine from a winery that is operating in downtown Los Angeles – and it isn’t the famous one you were thinking of! Check out the end of this blog for the lineup of wines. Okay….now you can laugh.
I’ve always been a Willie Nelson fan. He’s from Texas so that just about sealed the deal for me. I wasn’t born in Texas, but I got there as quick as I could. Well, ol’ Willie just released a new album “My Way” which is a tribute to Frank Sinatra. You can listen to the song “Summer Wind” off of the new album. Just a wonderful rendition of that lovely song that the Chairman did so many years ago.
Willie is going to be at the Hollywood Bowl on October 21st as he headlines the Outlaw Music Festival. His son Lukas Nelson will also be on the bill. I have never seen Willie live in concert, so I am going to get tickets and go see Willie. I don’t want to miss the opportunity to see one of music’s greatest singer/songwriters. For tickets and more info go to the Live Nation website.
Willie’s gotten a little flack for endorsing Beto O’Rourke in the U.S. Senate race against Ted Cruz. In an article in Rolling Stone, Willie says this about the negative comments he received for his endorsement, “People will sometimes get upset because I’ve got a vote, too,” Nelson says, before breaking out an old saying: “Opinions are like assholes, everybody’s got one.” That’s why I love the man! Straight forward, Texan through and through, just like his music.
My favorite Willie Nelson song? Gosh, there are so many of his songs that I love. If I have to pick just one, I pick his cover of the Pearl Jam song “Just Breathe” written by Eddie Vedder. Willie sings the song with his son Lukas and it is a beautiful song and touching video. View the video here Just Breathe.
Last add Willie Nelson: Willie has also appeared in several films and television productions. I remember him and Gary Busey in Barbarosa and he also appeared in Stagecoach as Doc Holliday. Just when I thought the Western genre was disappearing, I saw “Godless” on Netflix a couple of weeks ago. It was one of the best westerns I have seen. It starred Jeff Daniels in a role that will take you by surprise. Check out the official trailer here Godless.
Winery suggestions in Napa: Two longtime regulars of the Tasting Room – Dorothy and Jorge – asked me for recommendations for wine tasting in Napa Valley. I gave them several wineries I thought would be worth visiting while trying to steer them away from the same ol’ same ol’ wineries that are crowded and are “meh.” If you ever need winery suggestions or wine suggestions, drop me a line at firstname.lastname@example.org and I’ll try my best to steer you in the delicious direction!
The Hollywood Reporter has an article on the wineries in Napa and Sonoma that are attracting the A- list crowd from Hollywood. So where do the likes of Kevin Costner, Matthew McConaughey, and Lea Thompson hang out when they are up in Napa and Sonoma? Scribe Winery (which I am working on getting their hard to get wines in at the Bottle Shop) and French Laundry are two of the top spots cited in the article. For more Hollywood hot spots check out the article here The Hollywood Insider’s Guide to Wining and Dining in Napa and Sonoma.
The wines I’m loving this week: Here are the wines I’ll be tasting this Thursday and Friday at The Tasting Room.
Angeleno Wine Co. The Meadow Rosé, California 2017 $18.99 The Angeleno Wine Co. is located in downtown Los Angeles at 1646 N Spring Street. It is the city’s first urban winery opened since prohibition. This Rosé is made mostly from Graciano and is lovely and bright with acidity on lifting finish.
Sparkman Celllars Wonderland Grenache, Yakima Valley 2015 $29.99 91 Points Wine Spectator. I love the Cabernet Sauvignon blend (Holler) that we have at the shop and I love this wine too. Supple, smoky with lovely spice on the finish.
Kobalt Window Pane Red Wine, California 2013 $29.99 Excellent value red blend made up of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, and Carignane. This is one bold wine with chewy tannins and wild spice and smokiness. I love the addition of the petite sirah which gives it a brooding character. Give me this over The Prisoner any day!
Maseria Liveli Orion Primitivo, Salento 2016 $14.99 Primitivo is basically Zinfandel in Italy. This wine comes from the “heel” of the boot in Italy. I tasted this just a week ago and tried it with some customers at the Tasting Room and immediately it was a huge hit. I didn’t even know the price of the bottle but I ordered three cases right away! You’re going to love this sexy zinfandel from Italy!
Last word: The most expensive part of having children is all the wine you have to drink.
