A visit from Krisi Raymond

Welcome to my new blog site! Here I’ll post all my new adventures in wine as I meet winemakers and taste new wines. When I’m on the road, I’ll tell you about exciting places that I’ve discovered whether it’s a new winery or a great place to eat. Thanks for signing up and I hope you enjoy as I blog about my travels and adventures with wine!

Let’s start off with a recent visit I had with Krisi Raymond, owner and winemaker at Five Vintners. Krisi is the fifth generation in her family to grow grapes and make wine in the Napa Valley. She’s got wine in her blood starting with her great-great-grandfather Jacob Beringer and continuing with her grandfather Roy Raymond. If you think you’ve heard those names before – Beringer and Raymond – you would be correct in thinking that Krisi really does have some wine history to her name.

Krisi brought along three outstanding wines from her winery. I tasted the 2016 Sauvignon Blanc, Admiral’s Vineyard, Napa Valley; the 2013 Zinfandel, Dry Creek Valley; and the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley.  There was a common thread throughout tasting Krisi’s wines. She has a deft hand at making wines that are balanced and restrained.  The Sauvignon Blanc was focused, crisp, and bright with notes of grapefruit and citrus. It wasn’t over the top with the grapefruit like other Sauvignon Blancs sometimes are. On top of that, the grapes are organically farmed. As with all of Krisi’s wines, balance is the key here. The Cabernet Sauvignon was delightful with superbly balanced dark fruit, well integrated tannins, and plenty of acidity on the finish to give this wine a wonderful savoriness. The Zinfandel packed bright cherry fruit along with pepper and spice and all the good things you expect from a well made Zinfandel. Again, the wine finishes with a savory, smoky character that I just adore in a Zinfandel.

All of Krisi’s wines are hand crafted, small production gems that sell at very good prices. She’s not only an excellent winemaker but she is also a person with a passion for her craft and one of the nicest people that I have met in this industry. Thanks Krisi for stopping by and tasting me on your superb wines.

The Zinfandel and Sauvignon Blanc are available at The Bottle Shop in Sierra Madre.

    1. I have started to include the prices of the wines featured each week at The Tasting Room under the Tastings tab on my blog. For wines that I mention in my blog that aren’t available at the Bottle Shop I will try to include pricing in the future!
